Coach figured it'd come up short so the guys should've been there to knocked it down or take a knee with it to prevent the offense from rushing down there and grabbing the ball for the TD..... which is basically what ultimately happened. There would be even more ripping on the coach had he NOT put someone down there, defense ignores the flight of the kick and the offense recovers and takes it in. They had plenty of reason to be down field for the kick!
