In 1997, Esquire Magazine ran the cover story of the future of football featuring a cover shot of a the 2-time NFL MVP Brett Favre (he would win a third following the ’97 season) and a young talent by the name of Peyton Manning from the University of Tennessee who would end up become the #1 draft pick the next year.
The young Manning had just come back to UT for his senior season and a chance to take the Vols to their first Championship in over 40 years. Meanwhile, the veteran Favre had won the Super Bowl the year before and had a fistful of MVP awards to brag about.

Wow, that is truly amazing dude.

Manning might retire before Favre

Seeing Brett in the green and gold brings warmth to my heart. Funny they went with Manning, they could have went with Mr. Bust Ryan Leaf, as he had some serious hype at the time.

Very true. It would be a whole different article if they had Leaf on there!
