Five Worst NFL Coaches

June 8, 2010 – Michael Cahill

There is such a principle as “The Peter Principle.” It is where a person works competently enough to be promoted to their highest level of incompetence. We see this happen in the NFL all the time. Quarterback coaches become offensive coordinators, then assistant head coaches, then head coaches, then GM’s and VP of Football Operations.

Somewhere along the line they reach the Peter Principle. We usually see it at the head coach level. Guys who are good at one thing get asked to be good at many things. Head coaches are a special breed, not only do they have to know their football but they need to keep a balance between being open to new ideas and making sure they are always the ones calling the shots.

Not every coach in the NFL is doing a great job though. Some coaches are the Peter Principle in effect. So without further ado, let’s look at the 5 coaches who are walking examples of the Peter Principle.

5. Jack Del Rio - Jacksonville

Picture 1 of 5

I’m not sure who is worse for the Jaguars, Del Rio or management themselves, but it seems that they are hoping against hope that Del Rio can turn this team around. With just 12 wins in the 2 years after making it to the second round of the AFC playoffs, you have to ask yourself “How much will Jack Del Rio help?” I can’t imagine he’ll help much. This is a stagnant team that is in desperate need of new life. That begins with firing Del Rio.

Not so sure I agree with your list but then I feel any coach can look like a genius it just depends on the players he has. Many times the head coach has little to do with player personal as the GM puts the team together. It is all about the players. When Mike Shanahan had John Elway as his QB he was considered a coaching genius then Elway retires and Shanahan is an average coach. A coach just needs to do his job but the players make it happen. 4 years ago Lovie Smith was a genius as the Bears reached the Super Bowl. They did it with defense now the defense struggles and he the worst coach in the NFL. Are you saying he all of sudden forgot how to coach?

Lovie Smith? The bears are 9-3 right now and that cover 2 is looking pretty good considering they are leading the league in points allowed. Also took them to a super bowl in 06 in which they probably had no business being in. No Josh Mcdaniels either? Weak list.
