Remember the NFL Huddles Mascots?

June 1, 2010 – Pigskin Doctors

In the early 80′s, I want to say the 1983 season, the NFL decided to tap into the ever growing market of childrens toys with their newest merchandising idea, the NFL Huddles. Each of the 28 teams at the time featured a cartoon caricature as their new mascot as well as huge amount of toys, collectors pins, bed sheets, coloring books, die-cast cars, trading cards and plush dolls.

It was a perfect way to market to kids who had yet to see what the fuss was about with the female cheerleaders. I remember growing up the now obvious marketing toward kids was a hit as everybody wanted to get the toys for their favorite team. Even Lyle Alzado wanted one!

The NFL Huddles Mascots live on today with collectors. The trading cards and plush dolls are the most readily available but you’ll still have to search awhile to find a decent version of the team you want.

Personally, I like the Green Bay Packers Huddle because he’s carrying around some links of delicious meat. Yum!

    I was the Denver Mascot huddles from 1989 – 1992. I thought to google it and found this site. I have some great memories and loved being the Mascot. I will try to up load som old school pics.
