JaMarcus Russell arrested on Drug Charge
The comeback by one of the biggest busts in NFL draft history can be put on hold as former #1 pick JaMarcus Russell was charged with possession of a controlled substance — codeine syrup — after being arrested at his home in Alabama on Monday, authorities said.
Russell continues to defy logic as he shows so little interest in returning to the game that once brought him fame and fortune.
An undercover narcotics investigation by Mobile County Sheriff’s busted Russell at his house for codeine syrup, which can be used to make “Purple Drank,” a recreational concoction common in the South that was profiled in a June 26 ESPN.com video (See below) because of its popularity among some professional athletes. Purple Drank consists of liquid codeine, soda and Jolly Rancher candies, according to the video.
