Top Ten NCAA Football Game Covers

EA Sports’ NCAA Football is an institution. The series dates all the way back to 1993 and college football video games have grown in popularity exponentially since then. The first game of the franchise, Bill Walsh College Football, wasn’t even licensed by the NCAA.

In the game, you could play as one of the top 24 teams in college football from the 1992 season but without the NCAA licensing, teams were listed as their city and no team logos were used. The game even allowed you to play in a playoff system; you probably won’t find that in the game anymore. Since then, things have changed quite a bit.

With the release of NCAA Football 11 on July 13, I present to you the top ten covers of the EA Sports’ college football franchise. The selection is based on how each cover looks, the context of the game within the series, and the importance of the player on the cover.

The second installment of the game brought the best cover of the two Bill Walsh games. After this game, the series was renamed to “College Football USA”, presumably because Walsh was no longer a coach in college football. The cover shows Bill Walsh, one of the greatest head coaches of all time who led the San Francisco 49ers to three Super Bowls, looking back at his Stanford players. Walsh passed away in 2007 and although he will of course be remembered for his contributions as a coach, we remember him here at No. 10.
