Tony Dungy Wants To Censor Rex Ryan, NFL and Not Himself

Tony Dungy does not see the NFL as a place for cursing. After witnessing the HBO Series “Hard Knocks,” Dungy was not pleased with all the cussing that flowed from Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan’s mouth. One can safely assume that Dungy has never met Rex Ryan before the show aired.

Dungy, a devout Christian who has been a speaker for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, recently called on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to have a talk with Ryan about his penchant for cursing on the HBO show.

“I don’t know that (Goodell) will or not, but I would hope that he does because I just don’t think the league needs that,” Dungy, who was head coach for the Colts and Bucs, and now an NBC NFL analyst, said on Dan Patrick’s radio show on Monday. “I don’t think our young people need to hear that that’s the way it’s done to be successful. Because it doesn’t have to be that way.”

Greenburg said he has not heard from Goodell or anyone else at the league office, adding that the NFL is well aware of the tone and language that has become a part of the series. “Hard Knocks” is co-produced by HBO and NFL Films, the league’s video arm. [via]

Dungy is sticking up for his beliefs and there’s nothing wrong with that.  But he’s way off base here. I believe that the NFL should allow “Hard Knocks” and coach Rex Ryan to do whatever they want.

Dungy believed that Michael Vick should be shown mercy for his animal abuse acts but wants the NFL to censor Rex Ryan. Guess Dungy’s Glass Bubble doesn’t include his own sideline or QB Peyton Manning.

Remember that Dungy said, “I don’t think our young people need to hear that that’s the way it’s done to be successful. Because it doesn’t have to be that way.”

Roll that clip of the Colts sideline cussing from their Super Bowl year and introduced by Dungy himself. It looks like cussing didn’t hurt these guys. In fact, it helped them worked out their problems and win a Super Bowl!

Mmmmm….the hypocrisy is yummy.

To help Dungy in his cause on keeping the NFL clean, here’s a small sampling of recommended changes that I believe Tony would endorse. It would help clean up the image of the league and make the game more enjoyable at the same time.
