Troublemaker LeGarrette Blount throws punch at Titans practice
Don’t tell Tony Dungy but the Tennessee Titans got a little rowdy at practice this week.
Of all the players in the NFL who it would seem couldn’t afford to get into a fight at practice it was LeGarrette Blount. But his coach is not disappointed in his latest transgression.
Blount was left out of the NFL Draft party due to his days at the University of Oregon where he punched Boise State defensive end Byron Hout during a game. Blount was suspended for 10 games despite his potential and skills. Here’s a clip of that fateful night.
The latest incident occurred Wednesday night at the end of an intense practice. Blount was running offensive plays when numerous shoving matches took place between the offense and defense.
After an altercation, Blount punched defensive end Eric Bakhtiari in the facemask after Blount’s helmet was pulled off during the play.
The Tennessee Titans gave him a chance, and then Blount Wednesday threw a punch at a teammate in practice after a dispute. Blount had just come back to the team after missing practice due to the death of his grandmother.
Blount apologized, just as he did a year ago as a member of the Oregon Ducks.
But surprisingly coach Jeff Fisher says he is not worried about the incident.
“I am not disappointed whatsoever,” Fisher told the Tennessean. “His past is his past. Is that the first punch you’ve seen at camp this year? No. OK. I am not disappointed whatsoever. I have great confidence in the young man that he has learned from his mistake and is very competitive.” [via]
Fisher should have reasons for concern. Not because he punched a teammate. That happens all the time in the NFL practices. During a game is another thing.
However, the fact that Blount was able to loose his cool so easily should send up a red flag. I wouldn’t be surprised if the defensive coaches prompted Bakhtiari and his squad to go after Blount like they did in an attempt to see if he cracked.
Maybe he just needed to get it out of his system. Maybe it’s a sign that Blount still hasn’t grown up. Either way Blount needs to throttle back his anger before he costs his team seriously during the regular season.
