2012 Honda Ferris Bueller Super Bowl Commercial – “Matthew’s Day Off”

January 31, 2011 – Capt. Gridiron

Oh, those sneaky Hollywood people. They had me going when I heard there was a rumor of a possible “Ferris Bueller” sequel. The beloved 80′s comedy staring Matthew Broderick and directed by the legendary John Hughes is a timeless dedication to the art of slacking off, something my generation knows all too well.

I knew since the passing of John Hughes a few years back that my dream of a “Ferris Bueller” sequel just wouldn’t happen. Thankfully, the folks at Honda decided to use their Super Bowl ad time wisely and dedicate a commercial for their new CR-V to the original “Ferris Bueller” movie.

Honda claims they have hid over two dozen references to the movie throughout the commercial. Some are obvious, some are VERY subtle. I’ve caught a few but I’m going to have to watch if a few times to see them all. Check out the extended version of the Official 2012 Honda CR-V Game Day Commercial – “Matthew’s Day Off”

Carolina Panthers Update Logo

January 30, 2011 – Dr. Crackback

For the first time in over 15 years, the Carolina Panthers have updated their look and feel. Fresh off the exciting rookie season of QB Cam Newton, the Panthers will be more exciting than in past years and should see more playoff time and winning seasons.

That means more exposure on TV and potential playoff games and hopefully more fans. So it’s a perfect time to update the team’s look.  You’ll notice offhand the eyes, whiskers and teeth are stylized as well as some shading added.  Overall, it’s a good update to a decent logo.

The logo is not changed dramatically but rather small tweeks to keep the look and feel of the primary logo. The team name font, however, gets a much needed update from the 90′s graffiti style script to a more modern, bolder font.

[via Carolina Panthers.com] The updated identity reflects a modernized version of the previous logo and logotype and visually connects the two together. It has been designed to provide a more aggressive, contemporary look to the logo while making it more three-dimensional for ever-increasing digital use.

“We have one of the finest and most recognizable logos in the NFL and wanted to make it as modern as possible without losing the dramatic essence of the mark,” said Carolina Panthers President Danny Morrison.

The Panthers will transition to the refined logo throughout 2012. The primary tweaks made by the National Football League’s creative department are primarily in the features in the eye and mouth. The logo will also be accompanied by a change in the primary logotype.

January 29, 2011 – Dr. Pancake

The 2011 NFL season was a fantastic journey that saw some of the best football played in years. Every team (except the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Indianapolis Colts) made for some great football moments and one fan has created a sweet video showing his favorite catches from the 2011 NFL season.

Clocking in at 8 minutes +, this video pretty much encompasses it all and if you dig it you can catch more of his awesome work at his website, The Vikings World.   This guy does a sweet job editing some nice videos. Hope he goes to town on some Super Bowl videos to get us excited for the big game.

Top Ten Aaron Rodgers Excuses For Choking In The Playoffs

January 28, 2011 – Capt. Gridiron

As all the Packers fan know by now but still have yet to fully process, this year’s Super Bowl will not include a chance for the Green Bay Packers to repeat.  The Giants were fresh off a thumping of the Falcons and no one in Green Bay took the G-men serious for the Pack’s first playoff game.

That of course meant they were thumped by the G-men which left a large number of Cheeseheads around the country stunned.  QB Aaron Rodgers had a few reasons as to why the Giants were so easily allowed to win.

10) Matt Flynn kept heckling me during the game.

9) Madonna at halftime? Ugghhh…no thanks.

8 ) My practice was limited due to extra “Discount Double Check” autograph signings at local State Farm agency.

7) Forgot to tell receivers to catch the ball during the game. My bad.

6) I was up all night thinking about how to photobomb the captains and forgot to study the playbook.

5) Just one more failure of the Obama Administration.

4) I was distracted by the smell of Umenyiora’s Drakkar Noir cologne drifting across the offensive line.

3) Forgot to tell the defense to try and tackle Eli during the game. My bad. Man, I have to tell those guys everything…

2) Pre-game massage from Abe Froman, the Sausage King, was less than relaxing.

1) Hey, I still won the Super Bowl just as many times as Brett Favre so leave me alone!

Clairvoyant Camel Picks Giants to Win Super Bowl

January 27, 2011 – Capt. Gridiron

When it comes to the Super Bowl suddenly everyone becomes a gambler and expert on the game. People who usually don’t follow the game or even bet on the sport will likely watch the event and pass a wager or two on the big game.

That apparently includes zoo animals now.

Princess, a 25-year-old camel who lives at the Popcorn park Zoo in Lacey township, N.J., has accurately predicted the winners of five of the past six Super Bowls, the zoo’s general manager, John Bergmann, told ABC News.com.

Interesting. I would wager the same too and not just because a camel said so. OK, maybe it helps that my decision is backed up by Princess but also I had a dream where my cat was wearing a Giants jersey so I think there’s something there.

I’m sure it will be a close game either way but when someone as esteemed as Princess comes through with five of the last six I’ll take it because she’s doing better than me.

Bergmann writes the name of one team on his right palm and the other on his left palm. He then places a graham cracker in each hand. Whichever cracker Princess nibbles is the winner.

“She chose without hesitation this year,” Bergmann said.

Pats Giants Super Bowl XLVI [INFOGRAPHIC]

January 26, 2011 – Capt. Gridiron

Are you ready for the rematch of New England and New York? I sure am.  It should be one of the best matchups in the big game since, well, the last time these two teams met. Even then we all thought the 18-0 Pats would easily cut up the Giants but then the miracle happened and Eli Manning and Co. made a last minute comeback to win the game in one of the best Super Bowls ever.

Here’s an infographic that breaks down all the Super Bowl stats you need to know for the big day including the amount of beer and nachos consumed during the game.

Did you know that 325+ million gallons of beer will be consumed on Super Bowl Sunday? Crazy and I thought I drank too much.

NFL Alternative Team Logos

January 26, 2011 – Capt. Gridiron

Gridiron League is a collection of idealized NFL insignias that pay tribute to each team’s history and geography in a period-specific aesthetic that glorifies the Vince Lombardi-era over the Cold-Activated-era. This is not an exercise in nostalgia but an interpretation of the league’s founding principles through the symbols that we, as football fans, identify with most.

Graphic artist Wes Kull is a football fan who came up with a new look to the standard NFL Logos we all know and love. Check out some smaples below and then see the whole portfolio at Gridiron League.

Eli Manning, ‘You Know’

January 25, 2011 Dr. Hut Hut Hike

Eli Manning’s postgame interview after the Giants upset the San Francisco 49ers include a clip of the younger Manning using the phrase ‘You Know’ 29 times in the two-minute interview. Just three more and he would match the 32 completions he had during the game.

Patriots Gronkowski – Yo Soy Fiesta

January 25, 2011 – Dr. Pancake

Reporting for ESPN Espanol, a reporter interviews Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski in the locker room after their huge win over the Ravens that propelled New England to the Super Bowl.

Gronk went to Arizona State so you might think Big Gronk might have picked up some Spanish in his time there. Instead it seems he’s not much better than I am when it comes to the language.

The reporter talks to Gronk who does his best to interject some of the 16 Spanish words he knows into the interview.
