One day after the Philadelphia Eagles cut ties to their Pro Bowl defensive end the Jacksonville Jaguars have claimed Jason Babin. The 2-9 Jaguars were one of eight teams to put in a claim for the tattooed sack artist who has struggled this year on a disappointing Eagles team. He has only registered 5.5 sacks, but did have 18 last year. Reports out of Philadelphia are saying that Babin had quit on coach Andy Reid and was no longer giving his all each play. No idea if that is true considering that defense has struggled all season. If anyone looks like they aren’t earning their big money contract it would be Nnamdi Asomugha who has been torched all season and seems to have forgotten how to tackle.
The question is why did the 2-9 Jags decide to make a play for him? They are out of the playoff race, they have a big youth movement going on, and it will cost the over $1.6 million to have him on the roster the rest of the season. They will have the rights to retain him for next season at a base salary of only $4.2 million which I assume they woul0d do if he performs well in the final five weeks. The down side for Babin is that apparently every playoff caliber team in the league was hoping he would clear waivers so they could make a fun at him as a free agent. Even if the Jags hadn’t put a claim in some playoff caliber teams were making a move.
Has to suck to get cut from one losing team to only go to a team that is losing even more. My guess is he blows up Mark Sanchez in two weeks and makes every Jets fan have flashback to last season when he manhandled the Jets QB.
