Believe it or not, but Terrell Owens is still playing football. Not NFL football, mind you. But some little Arena League team in which Owens has pinned hopes on a comeback that will end with a big NFL contract.

But it seems no one is listening to the guy who has left a series of burning bridges in his wake and still can’t figure out why no one wants him. So let’s bring in Dr. Phil and this awesome screen cap!

Personally, I find it difficult to feel much pity for T.O. Maybe it’s because he’s a douche. Maybe it’s because he’s pissed away $80 million in contract money and has four kids from four different women. He’s not exactly a role model. He’s more like the Kim Kardashian of the NFL lately so that doesn’t help.

Plus, he could always sell off a couple of those big-ass diamond earrings to help pay the bills.

In one of the classiest moves I have seen in years in the sports world, Tampa Bay signed Rutgers injured player Eric LeGrand after the draft in a nice move by LeGrand’s former college coach. Even though it’s a symbolic contract it’s a classy move and LeGrand looks good in the new threads!

[via Yahoo! Sports] Legrand, whose football career at Rutgers came to an emotional and unexpected end in October 2010 when a special teams tackle left him paralyzed from the neck down, was signed by Bucs head coach Greg Schiano, who coached Rutgers at the time of Legrand’s injury.

It’s only been about 18 months since doctors initially predicted that Legrand would remain on a ventilator for the rest of his life. Eric proved them wrong by breathing on his own in a matter of weeks, but didn’t dream of stopping there. Just a year following the incident, he graced the cover of Sports Illustrated after his return to Rutgers to lead his teammates onto the field earned the magazine’s “Best Moment of the Year.”

Can the player elected to grace the cover of the Madden video game from EA Sports shake the Madden Curse?

The players who get on the cover have a hard time getting through the year. Some are worse than others but last years cover boy, Peyton Hillis, took down two other Peyton’s so it seems like the curse is getting worse.

Detroit Lions WR Calvin “Megatron” Johnson, owner of one of the best nicknames in the league, just signed a huge contract with Detroit to help add to the jinx of beating out Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton for the fan voted Madden 12 cover.

Johnson signed an eight-year deal worth up to $132 million last month. Wow. Nothing adds to the drama of the curse than news like that.

Hopefully, Megatron can show us all that the curse doesn’t exist. Or at least break the curse that does even though some believe it’s all in the fans heads.

April 21, 2012 – Capt. Gridiron

Oh, the mid-80′s were such a simpler time. The NFL was coming into its own as the popularity of the sport and the Super Bowl reached record numbers. Uniforms were loose and tacky without much thought to style or functionality. The rival USFL had lost its way and the new music of rap was taking hold in mainstream culture.

That meant it was alright to do things like this. Several teams including the Bears with their Super Bowl rap had found success with the fans by rocking the Keytar and gathering the players to bust a rhyme. Today, these rap videos are hard to stomach which is why it’s such delicous awesomness to find videos like the 1986 Redskins rap called “Thanks 12th man.”

Before Dan Synder bought his franchise all the way to the cellar, the Redskins had a nice run of success in the 80′s with two Super Bowl wins including one in the 1987 season. So this video must have done something because they did win the big game the next year.

In 1986 the ‘Skins were powered by Art Monk, Charles Mann, Darrell Green, Jay Schroeder and head coach Joe Gibbs (before he retired for the first time). And If you are ready, and I think you are, prepare to witness something you have never witnessed before…

Here is a music video from 1986. This video features the 1986 Redskins in a Thanks to the fans! This was part of the 75th anniversary Giveaway to fans. Enjoy the dance moves. Hail to the Redskins!

This post started out as the Ten Worst Things Than The Pittsburgh Steelers New Throwback Uniforms but I couldn’t get past three things. There are prison uniforms, giant killer bees, and the World’s Ugliest Dog. After that,…not much.

Woof!

The Steelers are celebrating their 4th Anniversary of Ben Roethlisberger not raping someone so they decided to roll out their prision uniforms from the prohibition era.

Personally, I’m under the belief that just because your franchise wore it at one time doesn’t make it a good reason to dust it off to hurt our eyes.

Short of something you’d see luchadores where during a wrestling match, the Steelers just pushed down hard on the throttle on the ugly car and ran themselves into a brick wall.

Kinda like Ben Roethlisberger driving a motorcycle.

I also think it’s fitting that the Steelers chose a local Burger King bathroom to grab a chance to do a photo op of this turd. Somebody please flush.

April 15, 2012 – Capt. Gridiron

The worldwide impact of the sport of football lives strong in South Asia. Last fall the announcement came of the establishment of the Elite Football League of India (EFLI), which is the first men’s professional American football league in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

It’s nice to see the American version of football spreading across the globe and getting established in an area relatively new to the sport. India is huge on the sport of Cricket, which I tried to watch once. I got confused and then fell asleep. Not my cup of tea.

The EFLI is slated to begin playing in 2012 with ten teams located in various cities across India, one in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and one in Bangladesh. The EFLI will be South Asia’s first professional American football league.

[via] The Elite Football League of India will create an exclusively Indian product packaged perfectly and specially to advantage television and media support ultimately to become the most valuable sports franchise in the world.

Thousands of jobs will be created as a result of the immense need for coaches, athletes, trainers, referees, and support staff as well as the even greater demand for employees in the legal, maintenance, media, marketing and retail sectors.

And if you want to catch out the fun be sure to click below to watch the video of the first scrimmage from the EFLI from Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, India.

In fact, his dedication to using Twitter to break news is one of the reasons I believe that Twitter is so popular.

Adam has helped other journalists realize the instant impact of breaking news is a popular trait.

But now I just think of him as a genius because this whole time we were contemplating the Madden Curse and this whole time it seems like the conspiracy to ruin the year of the guy on the cover is deeper than we all imagined! It’s a conspiracy!

Wow! Consider my mind blown!

Last year’s Madden Curse on Peyton Hillis was so strong it might have even affected Peyton Manning and Sean Payton. Bad year to be Peyton.

The search for the cover boy for Madden 13 is in the works and Aaron Rodgers, Calvin Johnson, Cam Newton and Patrick Willis are in the lead right now. If I were one of those guys I’d start thinking about lobbying for the other three in the voting process.

Football may be over with at the moment but one star is still shining on Sundays. Tebow arrived in Texas to help out the Easter Service for Georgetown’s Celebration Church where an estimated 20,000-30,000 fans attended a rock-concert type of event where Tebus sat down and chatted up his religious beliefs for the crowd in honor of the Easter holiday.

In case you were not able to travel to Texas for the event, here’s a play-by-play of what happened including an LSU helmet and thousands of people swooning to Tebow’s words.

There was nothing flashy or crazy or ridiculous about the event except for the fact that the event occurred. And the event occurred because Tim Tebow is who he is. [via Roster Watch]

If you didn’t think that Tebow appearing in a pink shirt and talking shop would get you into the Easter spirit than just look at this video of Kate Upton in a Peter Cottontail outfit. Now He’s risen… know what I mean!

April 7, 2012 – Capt. Gridiron

It’s somewhat fitting that the UFL, long thought to be dead, would give fruit to rumors of a return just in time for Easter weekend.

The United Football League, which lost a reported $120 million in its first three years, was designed as an alternative to the NFL with its summer schedule. When the NFL Lockout loomed last year, the UFL thought it was poised to step in and fill in the void of lost football games. But with debt and bad management, the UFL had trouble even opening the doors and all looked lost.

[Via LVRJ.com] Despite the resignation of commissioner Michael Huyghue, losses of more than $120 million in its first three years and rumors that it would fold, the UFL will return in 2012, league founder Bill Hambrecht said Friday.

“We’re moving forward,” said Hambrecht, the Las Vegas Locomotives’ owner. “We fully expect to play.”

An official announcement is expected around May 1. The league will conduct a meeting April 16 in Las Vegas to finalize plans for the season.

Hambrecht said the five-team UFL will play primarily on weekday nights beginning in mid-September and is expected to have a national television contract.

The league will consist of Las Vegas, defending champion Virginia, Omaha, Sacramento and an expansion team, most likely in San Antonio, though Southern California and Portland, Ore., have been discussed.

The UFL reportedly has cut a deal for games to be aired on the CBS Sports Network (Cable 333). Each team also is trying to sign a regional TV deal with a cable operator in its area.

“We believe we have a media deal in place,” said Hambrecht, who would not comment on the CBS tie-in. “With that in mind, we are moving ahead.”

While it sounds like we can’t count the UFL out of the picture just yet, I have a hard time imagining this league being around a few years. Competition from the Arena Football League and CFL will prove hard for the UFL to get ground in a market that isn’t that strong to begin with.

April 4, 2012 – Capt. Gridiron

And just like Keyser Söze … poof …Gregg Williams was gone.

The defense coach was once heralded for his great defensive performances that helped the New Orleans Saints win their first Super Bowl. Now, the NFL has indefinitely banned Williams for his role in the Bounty scandal in New Orleans after news that the Saints defensive players were paid bonuses for injuring and knocking out players.

I personally wonder if Gregg Williams will get the rare ‘banned forever’ tag in the NFL after the ordeal plays out. Commissioner Roger Goodell is not very pleased, as well he shouldn’t be, with the story erupting and showing and NFL team out the purposely injure opponents.

A new audio tape is burning up the Internet in which Williams instructs his players to injure San Francisco 49ers players during a playoff game. It’s pretty damning evidence as Williams personally mentions players names like Alex Smith, Frank Gore, and Michael Crabtree and tells his defensive players to injure them.

[via Pro Football Talk] Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin was sickened when he listened to the audio of former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams urging his players to hurt players on the 49ers.

Irvin said he understands that coaches fire up their players by talking about physical football. But when Williams urged his players to go after 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree’s ACL, he crossed a line that Irvin believes is unforgivable.

I know we can clown around about Saints head coach Sean Payton and how the NFL should lift his one-year ban but the fact that this Bounty system existed and Williams was so blatantly callous about it is rather disgusting. Video has NSFW language.

The audiotape is damaging enough that there are already rumors of various players thinking about suing the NFL and Gregg for the bounties. That could keep this story alive and kicking for quite awhile, unlike Williams’ career which just got knocked out of the game and … poof…disappeared.

[via Niners Noise] Former 49er QB Steve Young, also a lawyer has said that if he were playing today, he would sue the Saints and I hope players take his advice. Injuries are apart of the game, football is a violent sport by nature. Injuring players on purpose, especially attempting to go for one’s head is despicable. So many retired players suffer from a vast variety of injuries after retiring from the NFL. That’s one of the biggest reasons Goodell has done so much to make the game safer. Williams spit in the face of the leagues efforts and for that, I hope he pays for it the rest of his professional life.
