Reggie Bush: 10 Guys Who Deserve His Stripped Heisman

Today, Yahoo! Sports reported that the Heisman Trophy Trust is going to strip Reggie Bush’s Heisman trophy because of NCAA violations. ESPN’s Chris Fowler has called that report premature, saying the Trust has not come to a decision on the matter. However, the report had me thinking, if Reggie Bush couldn’t win the Heisman in 2005, who should have won it?

With a name like “Lipps,” she has to be hot. And she is! Meet 22-year-old blond super-hottie, Jessica Lipps. Yes. College football season starts tonight, people! We weren’t sure if we could make it through the long, hot summer, but the time has come and it’s here and now. So to help bump up the enthusiasm even more, we’ve compiled the hottest cheerleader pics from the Top 20 schools for you to drool over between now and kick-off time.

September 7, 2010- Capt. Gridiron

The rumors are rampant today about the Heisman Trophy Trust coming to a decision to strip 2005 Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush of his title for rules violations that made him ineligible.

Before we all get too excited just know that the Heisman Trophy Trust has not confirmed the decision as of yet. Meetings are scheduled for later in the month but no trophy has never been taken away from a player and it will be very interesting to see if they follow through with this news.

USC has already sent back their trophy but Reggie Bush has not. The bulk of the rumors about the trophy loss stem from Yahoo! Sports, who has been a huge force reporting about the USC sanctions.

Personally, I’m not sure why they’re bothering. But I guess if they can strip the crown from Miss U.S.A. they can take away Reggie’s title.

Yahoo! also reports that the award will go vacant for the year once Bush is stripped of the title. That means that 2nd place Vince Young would not be given the award.

[via ESPN] In July, USC president C.L. Max Nikias ordered the school’s athletic department to return its copy of Bush’s 2005 Heisman to the Heisman Trophy Trust. Nikias also ordered the school to remove nearly all references to Bush and former basketball player O.J. Mayo, including murals, as part of the NCAA’s directive to disassociate the school from the athletes.

As that time, Bush had not been asked to return his copy and the Heisman Trophy Trust said it had not yet decided whether Bush would be stripped of the award.

Bush met with Heisman representatives last month at the New York law offices of Emmet, Marvin & Martin, the sources said, according to the report.

The sources declined to discuss the details of that meeting, according to the report.

Last week, Texas coach Mack Brown said former Longhorns quarterback Vince Young, who finished second in the 2005 Heisman voting to Bush, should be given the award if Bush is stripped. Young led the Longhorns past USC to the BCS national championship that year, after Bush was awarded the Heisman in a landslide.

September 7, 2010 – Matt De Lima

Tight end production fluctuates from year to year. 2009 was a comeback year for the position. Where we are in 2010 is a boom year.

Breakout years from Vernon Davis, Jermichael Finley, Brent Celek, Owen Daniels (pre-injury), Kellen Winslow, Visanthe Shiancoe, and others mean this year’s draft is deeper than ever at tight end. Due to this, it isn’t as necessary to reach for a tight end. In the fourth and fifth rounds, tight ends will start flying off the board. But why reach?

Like kickers, tight end production will still fluctuate. With all the career years in ’09, letdowns are inevitable. If you reach and miss on a TE in the fifth round, that’s a draft spot where you could’ve landed a near sure-fire potential RB2 or WR2 or QB1.

Inevitably, there are going to be people who select a tight end early and those who will wait. Finding that in-between area is the challenge this year. Wait an extra round or two then take your guy.

(Note: Catch up on previous Fantasy Football positions here: Quarterbacks, Running Backs, Wide Receivers )

Rankings

Tier 1 2010 Top Fantasy Football Tight Ends

1. Dallas Clark – Indianapolis Colts (Bye: 7)
2. Antonio Gates – San Diego Chargers (Bye: 10)

Clark and Gates are the cream of the crop. Clark put up a career year across the board as Indianapolis lacked the presence of a true WR2. He had 100 receptions, 1106 yards and 10 touchdowns. Those will be tough numbers to top but even a slight drop-off will put him amongst the best at the position.

Gates has had better years but he consistently does very well. San Diego has a great offense and with WR1 Vincent Jackson holding out, Gates should get more targets than usual. Consider him a lock for 75 receptions, 1000 yards and 10 or more touchdowns.

Tier 2 2010 Top Fantasy Football Tight Ends

3. Vernon Davis – San Francisco 49ers (Bye: 9)
4. Jermichael Finley – Green Bay Packers (Bye: 10)
5. Tony Gonzalez – Atlanta Falcons (Bye: 8 )

After years as being an underachiever, a guy with all the talent in the world but nothing to show for it, the guy who prompted head coach Mike Singletary to take off his pants and give one of the more memorable post-game interviews in years, Vernon Davis had a career season scoring 13 touchdowns. The offense sputtered out of the gate in 2009, but when Alex Smith took over at quarterback, Davis and the 49ers played much improved.

Finley is one of those guys who is getting a ton of pre-season hype, mostly because of how he flourished when given a consistent role in Green Bay’s offense. Finley is definitely a player with a ton of upside and expectations.

Gonzalez is a legend. With his first reception in 2010, he’ll be the first tight end to tally 1,000 career receptions. It is unlikely Gonzalez finishes in the top three this year, but he’s very reliable and Matt Ryan’s check-down hero.

Tier 3 2010 Top Fantasy Football Tight Ends

6. Brent Celek – Philadelphia Eagles (Bye: 8 )
7. Jason Witten – Dallas Cowboys (Bye: 5)
8. Owen Daniels – Houston Texans (Bye: 7)
9. Kellen Winslow – Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Bye: 4)

Even here in tier 3, there are three great players.

Celek had a great 2009 season with 76 receptions, 971 yards and 8 touchdowns. Emerging after blowing up in 2008’s playoffs, Celek is one of the promising young tight ends in the league.

Witten, despite having 94 receptions, only had 2 touchdowns in 2009. He has a penchant of being a guy who does most of his damage in between the 20s, rather than in the red-zone, but PPR league or not, Witten is very consistent and hasn’t missed a game in his career.

Before Daniels endured a season-ending ACL injury, he was the top tight end in fantasy football. By occupying the wide open middle, he freed up his teammate Andre Johnson and vice versa. Daniels has to prove his season wasn’t a fluke and that he’s fully recovered but a big year is still worth something despite the injury.

Winslow shined in Cleveland, a team that has struggled finding a WR1 since Braylon Edwards’ breakout season. Then, after battling injuries, Winslow arrived in Tampa and re-established himself as a fantasy relevant TE. He’s a lock for a ton of receptions, 850 yards and a big handful of TDs. But the Bucs offense needs to improve dramatically in order for Winslow to be a reliable member of your squad.

Tier 4 2010 Top Fantasy Football Tight Ends

10. Zach Miller – Oakland Raiders (Bye: 10)
11. Visanthe Shiancoe – Minnesota Vikings (Bye: 4)
12. Chris Cooley – Washington Redskins (Bye: 9)
13. Greg Olsen – Chicago Bears (Bye: 8 )

Mill is the best tight end you’ve never heard of. Forced into obscurity because he is a Raider, Miller is my sleeper candidate for 2010. He’s a better receiver than a blocker; he just needs a reliable presence at QB, something very rare in PR2.

Shiancoe, more than any other guys in the Top 15, needs to establish himself as a pass-catcher. Despite a big season, Shaincoe still does not see the ball very often. He’s present but he’s not playing up his caliber of talent. Shiancoe a beast in the red-zone, but not every play goes for six points in the NFL.

Cooley broke his ankle in October of the 2009 season. Now that he’s finally returned, things are a little different. New head coach, new QB, new OC, new system. Cooley is talented, but he wasn’t playing that great last season before he got hurt and he needs to score more often.

Olsen has been a TE that the fantasy community has been waiting to exceed their expectations. 2009 came close but he can do better. With 60 receptions, 612 yards and 8 TDs, there’s still some room for improvement.

Tier 5 2010 Top Fantasy Football Tight Ends

14. John Carlson – Seattle Seahawks (Bye: 5)
15. Heath Miller – Pittsburgh Steelers (Bye: 5)
16. Kevin Boss – New York Giants (Bye: 8 )
17. Jeremy Shockey – New Orleans Saints (Bye: 10)
18. Jermaine Gresham – Cincinnati Bengals (Bye: 6)
19. Todd Heap – Baltimore Ravens (Bye: 8 )

Carlson is your best bet for a sleeper amongst this group. He’s the best natural receiver of the bunch and unfortunately, due to Seattle’s trouble along the offensive line, Carlson was forced to stay in to block many plays. Given more opportunities to make plays, he’s more than capable.

If it weren’t for unreliable quarterback play to start the season, Miller would likely be in Tier 4. Miller had a career year with 76 receptions, 789 yards and a half-dozen touchdowns. He’s improved a little bit every season he’s been in the league and that’s what you like to see.

Boss was expected to have a bigger year last season since the Giants lacked a steady receiver at the time. He did well, but he remains a guy best suited to be a backup TE2. Manning and co. will pass more in 2010 so it is possible Boss could improve.

Shockey is still a good TE, he just happens to play on a team that’s so good that the ball can only go around so much. Shockey will definitely put together 60 receptions, 650 yards and four touchdowns if he can stay healthy but he inevitably gets dinged up. But I still he’s got one good big year left in him.

Gresham just might be in the top 3 of athletic tight ends. Coming out of Oklahoma, he could do it all. With Cincinnati, who hasn’t had a fantasy relevant TE in years and years, he has an opportunity to be the next Jermichael Finley.

Heap has had a rough few years. I don’t think most people have him this high, but I expect the Ravens offense to improve and thus give him more red-zone opportunities and more targets.

Tier 6 2010 Top Fantasy Football Tight Ends

20. Dustin Keller – New York Jets (Bye: 7)
21. Fred Davis – Washington Redskins (Bye: 9)
22. Bo Scaife – Tennessee Titans (Bye: 9)
23. Tony Scheffler – Detroit Lions (Bye: 7)
24. Daniel Fells – St. Louis Rams (Bye: 9)
25. Anthony Fasano – Miami Dolphins (Bye: 5)

The remaining players should be considered TE2 at best

Keller will mostly be asked to block but keep an eye on him. Sanchez is still a developing rookie and a good tight end is a young QB’s best friend.

Davis, I don’t understand the hype. He played great, but Chris Cooley is still the man on the team. Davis is going a bit earlier than this but even if he does play, he’s still a TE2 in a new offense. Things could change drastically for him.

Scaife isn’t going to do much for you. He rarely scores, the Titans love to the run and Scaife requested trade and had missed most of training camp.

Scheffler replaces Brandon Pettigrew, who is still struggling to recover from a knee injury sustained last Thanksgiving. He’s not much of a blocker, but he was brought to Detroit to catch the ball.

Fells performed well when he was finally inserted into the fantasy lineup. Bradford and Fells need to develop of chemistry but in time, Fells could be a deep sleeper at TE.

Fasano put together a semi-memorable 2008 as the best TE nobody owned by scoring 7 TDs but came back to deeper obscurity in 2009. He’s a deep league option only.

September 7, 2010- Capt. Gridiron

Last week I looked at 6 players on the bubble as the preseason finishes up and the regular season begins. 5 of the 6 are gone but one’s an injury so that doesn’t count but I suppose. As NFL teams are finalizing their rosters as we head into the last week of preseason we see a last bit of turnover as a few vets are let go.

Here’s a look at some of the more notable changes over the week which may have an impact on your Fantasy Team.

Cut

Matt Leinart, QB Arizona Cardinals
No surprise here as the stagnant QB continues to make people scratch their heads at how he could of won a Heisman. The Cards let the former first rounder go this week and he quickly signed on with the Houston Texans for a one-year contract.

T.J. Houshmandzadah, WR Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks continue their house cleaning with quick boot of the star receiver even though the ‘Hawks have guaranteed $7 million to him this year. That means he will sign with any team and probably get the league veteran minimum and leave the ‘Hawks to foot the rest of the bill. Younger receiver like former bust Mike Williams will take the spot for T.J. If all goes well it looks like Housh will be signing on with the Baltimore Ravens.

Willie Parker, RB Washington Redskins
The former Pittsburgh RB was the odd man out in D.C. and was cut this weekend.

LeGarrette Blount, RB Tennessee Titans
The troubled RB couldn’t stop fighting and found his way to the cut list. Tampa has reportedly signed him on

Pat White, QB Miami Dolphins
White dropped down the depth chart and didn’t play this preseason. No surprise here but might be a good pickup for a backup for another team this season.

Troy Smith, QB Baltimore Ravens
Another one that’s not much of a surprise after Smith seemed to drop down the depth chart. The signing of Marc Bulger all but sealed his fate.

Michael Clayton, WR Tampa Bay Bucs
The overrated receiver was finally let go by the Bucs. After a great rookie year, Clayton has done very little in Tampa.

More Cuts….

Javon Walker, WR Minnesota Vikings
Chris Simms, QB Tennessee Titans
Dre’ Bly, CB Detroit Lions
Raheem Brock, DE Tennessee Titans
Matt Jones, WR Cincinnati Bengals
Josh Reed, WR San Diego Chargers
Kris Brown, K Houston Texans
Shayne Graham, K Baltimore Ravens

Traded

Sage Rosenfels, QB Minnesota Vikings
The Vikes are going with Webb and Jackson to backup Favre. Veteran QB Rosenfels was dealt to the Giants to help replace injured Jim Sorgi who will be out for the year.

Patrick Crayton, WR Dallas Cowboys
Crayton wanted a trade and got his wish as the Cowboys sent him to San Diego to help fill in for AWOL WR Vincent Jackson.

Mark Clayton, WR Baltimore Ravens
With the signing of Housh (see above) the Ravens dealt Clayton to the Rams.

Injuries

Bryon Leftwich, QB Pittsburgh Steelers
The tough veteran QB will be out the first part of the season after hurting his MCL in his knee. That’s tough news for the Steelers who will be left without Big Ben due to a suspension for 4 games and will instead have to rely on Dennis Dixon to carry the load.

LenDale White, RB Denver Broncos
The stout running back was working hard to make the Broncos. His spot on the team was already hampered with a 4 game suspension for substance abuse and now a ruptured Achilles tendon injury will sideline hime for the year.

Montario Hardesty, RB Cleveland Browns
The rookie RB from the Tennessee Vols will have to wait a year to get his chance to play. Hardesty tore his ACL and will be out for a year for the Brown who are trying to rebuild their running game

Elvis Dumervil, DE Denver Broncos
Out for the year after being put on IR

Brandon Stokley, WR Denver Broncos
Out for the year after being put on IR. Will most likely not return to the team after reports of him being cut before the injury.

Resigned

Alex Gibbs, Line Coach for the Seattle Seahawks
The renown line coach for the Seahawks abruptly called it quits with a week until the season opener. A huge loss for the ‘Hawks who are still trying to find their identity.

It’s been fun keeping up with the Jones this week in college football. We had Julio Jones at Alabama make a pimp one-handed TD catch this weekend. But that one gets some competition from East Carolina’s Justin Jones who helps win his teams game with a great Hail Mary catch.

Down 49-46 against Tulsa, the Pirates toss up a Hail Mary from the 33-yard line. It’s 4th down and only 5 seconds left and on the final snap, quarterback Dominique Davis (in his first start) launched the ball high toward a crowd of players in the end zone. The 6-foot-8 Jones jumped up and grabbed the ball, setting off a massive celebration.

Julio Jones of the Alabama Crimson Tide makes one of the best catches of the week with this one handed grab for a touchdown against San Jose State. Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram and defensive end Marcell Dareus were not able for the game but it didn’t matter. The Tide put on a thumping that saw many of the starters take to the bench early.

Julio Jones made this dramatic play for a 29-yard touchdown from backup quarterback A.J. McCarron early in the second quarter. He finished with six catches for 93 yards.

The Tide easily rolled over SJSU with a 48-3 victory on their road to repeat as National Champs. Although the competition was mild this week the Tide will have a tough challenge in week 2 as they host #19 Penn State.

The New York Jets self prophesied road to the Super Bowl is back on track after reports that their All Pro cornerback holdout Darrelle Revis has signed a contract with the team just in time for the season opener.

The drama of the Revis’ holdout began on Aug. 1, when players were scheduled to report to training camp. The holdout dominated the Jets headlines in the offseaon with Revis seeking to become the highest paid cornerback in the NFL. He was scheduled to make $1 million in the fourth year of his six-year rookie deal.

The Revis holdout hit epic proportions when NFL Films cameras followed the Jets around all summer for HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series. Revis’ holdout was a huge story line in the show even though he never appeared in an episode.

Revis, who didn’t make any public statements about the sometimes-acrimonious negotiations since minicamp in June, used his Twitter account to thank his family and his agents, Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod.

“To my family, neil, & john I love u guys I’m comin home baby!!!” Revis wrote. “Revis Island LET’S GO.”

Jets owner Woody Johnson and coach Rex Ryan flew to South Florida on Saturday and met with Revis; his mother, Diana Gilbert; and his uncle, former NFL player Sean Gilbert, over the weekend to try to get a deal done.

“I think that was an important step in the process, but there was still obviously more work to be done,” Tannenbaum said. “We spent all day looking at it and probably about (11 p.m. Sunday), we made a very significant breakthrough to finding a landing spot that was good for both sides.” [via]

Fighting in the stands has been quite the popular thing to do this week. We’ve had fans fight at baseball games and even tennis. Yes, tennis. Who knew they were such a rowdy bunch.

The University of Miami is known as a rough group who like to fight. That stereotype can also extend to their fans after an amateur video caught this crazy brawl in the stands during the “U’s” opening game this week.

Here’s part two of the fight as the goons spill down the seats. A bit of humor in the background as the PA system is playing a UM promo talking about how great and diverse of a University they are.

Maybe they can cut this video into their next ad. It’s safe to say it pretty much sums up the image of the “U.”
