Ranking the 2010 NFL Draft
The mark of a good franchise is the way it drafts. Teams that win consistently year after year know how to draft. The Colts draft well. The Patriots draft well. The Eagles draft well. Those teams that don’t draft well, even for a couple of years, can find themselves in football hell. The Raiders don’t draft well. The Lions don’t draft well. The Bills don’t draft well.
This is not a theory, it’s fact. With salary cap issues, short playing careers due to debilitating injury, and a myriad of other issues make it essential that a team consistently builds through the draft. Teams that contend generally have the most draft choices and are often always looking to stockpile.
So how did the 2010 draft go? Well we know that Sam Bradford went 1 while Claussen and McCoy dipped farther than Tebow. We think Dallas got a steal at 24 with Dez Bryant and that the Bears seemed to have made the most of their 75th pick with Major Wright. But 1 pick doesn’t determine the success of the draft. While we know it will take years to figure out if these picks worked out, it doesn’t hurt to gauge a team’s success early and see if it holds up down the road.
32. Buffalo Bills – It’s no wonder this franchise is in such disarray. They had trouble finding a coach this offseason and maybe the way they draft is why. The Bills needed a quarterback in the worst way and they pass on Colt McCoy and Jimmy Claussen twice. Instead they address the need of a running back(which they didn’t really need) in C.J Spiller. You have to like Spiller’s talent but Spiller is a runner like Chris Johnson and would do well in a warmer climate and with a quality offensive line.
They ditched their need for an offensive lineman. And went with a receiver which they don’t need considering they don’t have a quarterback.
31. Jacksonville Jaguars – I’m wondering if we understand the reason why the Jaguars are not where they want to be. The Jaguars needed a Quarterback, a Wide Receiver, and a Safety. They drafted none of those positions. They do have one of the best running backs in the business in Maurice Jones Drew but they went out and got another back. I realize you can never have too much depth but you need to draft need first, depth second.
30. Arizona Cardinals – So the Cardinals lost a lot of valuable guys in the off season. Kurt Warner and Bolden are both gone and they Cardinals really had 3 needs. They needed help in the secondary because they couldn’t cover anyone in the playoffs last year and they needed some offensive line help but neither turned out a drafting need for Arizona.
So how can you give a team a good ranking on their draft when they didn’t address their primary needs in the draft. This is why Arizona is an inconsistent team from year to year. With Warner gone, this team could be in for a long season.
29. Minnesota Vikings – This is a draft that doesn’t make sense to anyone. They are pinning their future to a quarterback who is over 40. They didn’t bother to draft Claussen or McCoy and then they trade up to get Toby Gerhart and lost value on the pick. Minnesota is loaded with talent, I’m just not sure they have much draft sense. This year is proof.
28. Chicago Bears – OK, I have to applaud the Bears for getting value for their picks. Major Wright at 75 was a good move. Getting Corey Wootten from Northwestern at 106 was an absolute steal and could be one of the surprise picks of the draft, but they can’t rank high on this list with only have total picks. They didn’t even pick until 75 missing out on a lot of quality in the second round. The Bears traded their second round pick for Gaines Adams. Adams passed away unexpectedly in the offseason and so while no one is criticizing the Bears for the trade, it should be noted that the Adams trade was probably not the best value for the Bears.
And once again the Bears approach a draft looking strictly for defensive help. They had a terrible offense last year lead by a brutal line and a terrible crop of receivers but the Bears opt for their first 3 picks to go on the defensive side of the ball. And while Wootten is a great find at 106, he doesn’t address their need at defensive tackle. The Bears are putting all their eggs into the basket of Tommie Harris and that’s a risky idea.
27. New York Jets – Here’s a team that didn’t need much and didn’t get much either. There only real need was some depth on the offensive line and they got that in Vladimir Ducasse. He’s young and raw but will have a great line to help bring him along.
The other place the Jets attacked was an already stellar secondary with the drafting of Kyle Wilson. There won’t be a better trio of cornerbacks in the NFL this year and the Jets may have cemented themselves as the team to beat in the AFC.
26. New Orleans Saints – The Super Bowl champs didn’t draft for need. They ignored the safety position and instead went for a quarterback with physical skills but not the mental make up you want to see from a prospect. Let’s hope Sean Payton knows what he’s doing.
25. Philadelphia Eagles – All those picks and nothing to write home about. This team needed help on the line and got not a single pick. They drafted a quarterback when they already have 2. They got great value for Charles Scott in the sixth round but this is a team with too many picks at their disposal to not address serious needs.
24. Green Bay Packers – Not the draft Packer fans would like to see. They need secondary help and help at the linebacker position but didn’t seem to want to address those needs. It’s true the Packers aren’t desperate at any position but they did manage to take a tackle so it wasn’t a complete waste.
23. Dallas Cowboys – You want to give them a good ranking because they got themselves Dez Bryant at a great slot(24th) but they failed to address real concerns. With Roy Williams, Jason Whitten, and Miles Austin the Cowboys didn’t need WR help. They needed help on the offensive line and in the secondary and the Cowboys didn’t address that at all.
22. Washington Redskins – With Donovan McNabb in place the Redskins needed only to worry about the offensive line and they went after that immediately. They got Trent Williams with the 4th overall pick and it will make a world of difference. The rest of their draft was sleepy but at least they got the one piece they really needed.
21. Indianapolis Colts – I’m not sure the Colts had their best draft either. They needed a safety and didn’t get one. They certainly need help on the offensive line but didn’t draft for it. This doesn’t seem like the right thing to do.
I know the Colts have a history of signing undrafted free agents to start for them, but perhaps this is the reason Manning never seems to have the kind of protection he needs.
20. Tennessee Titans – Love this: In the first 4 picks they address their four biggest needs: DE, TE, LB, and CB.
The Titans also draft a very interesting player in Myron Rolle. Rolle is the player that skipped football last year for a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford. He’s a good player and an even better young man. This is a true character pick and Rolle should serve as a positive role model for the rest of the team, and the rest of the league.
19. Oakland Raiders – Just when you thought you could automatically put the Raiders in the bottom 8 of any ranking draft year, but then Al Davis decided to start making smart football decisions. It seems like every decade he likes to go back to doing things that made him a once great owner and football mind.
So they are officially saying goodbye to the biggest mistake in NFL History (JaMarcus Russell) by acquiring Jason Campbell. They needed offensive line help and they got that in the 3rd and 4th round. One of those guys, Bruce Campbell is a huge gamble with an amazing upside. They drafted a lot of defense and it finally seems like Al Davis is looking to actually compete with the rest of the NFL…for now.
18. St. Louis Rams – They had the overall number 1 and you know they had no choice but to take Bradford but that doesn’t make it a good pick. I firmly believe Bradford will not add up to the hype and will ultimately not pan out in the NFL but I could be wrong.
With the rest of their picks they addressed some needs but maybe waited a little too long (99) to go after the wideout position but ultimately this draft will be about Bradford, and he wasn’t the best value at number 1.
17. Atlanta Falcons – I love that the Falcons drafted for need. They got help on the offensive line and on the defensive line. This wasn’t a team who needed a ton of skill positions but other than a tight end they covered their bases.
16. Miami Dolphins – A typical Bill Parcells inspired draft. They draft for need and need only. They needed help on the defensive line and the first pick Jared Odrick who is a hell of a talent coming out of Penn State. They continued to build on things teams build on: the offensive line and the defense. This is why Parcells excels where so many others fail.
15. New York Giants – The Giants had one need this draft year: defense. Last year their defense cost them a number of games as they couldn’t stop anyone. This year Tom Coughlin went after defensive positions almost every round. It’s not sexy. It’s not glamorous but it is the reason they won it all in 2007 and it’s what they need to win it all again.
14. Cincinnati Bengals – Good draft.
They secured a tight end right away and added Jordan Shipley as their WR threat, hopefully filling the void that the tragic death of Chris Henry left.
13. Baltimore Ravens – I heard some people liked the Ravens picks this year, but I can’t tell why. They had serious needs on the defensive line and in their secondary. They walked away with one defensive line player in Terrance Cody and all he brings to the table is a lack of stamina.
They seemed to not pay attention to what they needed and instead seemed to draft players they liked. This isn’t a terrible move if those players pan out, but I’m not sure that will happen.
12. Pittsburgh Steelers – The Steelers know how to draft, but I can’t say they had the best draft I’ve seen from them.
They got themselves the offensive line help they needed and got it early, and they got some help on the defensive side of the ball, but they made no great picks and got Emmanuel Sanders in the third when they should have waited til the fourth. Not to mention they passed on Golden Tate.
11. Denver Broncos – They had a very productive draft for the ost part. They needed to replace Brandon Marshall and they went with Demaryius Thomas who is a talented young receiver without all the issues that they feared Dez Bryant would bring to the table.
They needed offensive line help and they got it in the second and third rounds. Where they came up short was in their pursuit to get a linebacker. They had plenty of opportunities but opted on another receiver instead.
And they drafted Tebow. It was an interesting pick to say the least. Tebow is not a person who is capable of helping a team this year and so it makes you wonder why Denver would waste a first round pick on him. Still, McDaniels thinks he can make a quarterback out of him but no matter what that is gonna take years.
10. Detroit Lions – They get big applause for being smart enough to draft Suh, who is the best player in the draft in most people’s opinion. They took Jahvid Best in the first round, which if he can stay healthy, will be a great asset to the Lions. No one needs a winner more than the city of Detroit and while they may not win yet, at least they have reason to hope.
9. Carolina Panthers – This is a team that knew exactly what they needed in the draft. With Delhomme gone they needed a quarterback and they went after Jimmy Claussen. They needed some help at the wide receiver position to compliment Steve Smith and they went out and got two wideouts in their first 3 picks.
While Armanti Edwards is a stretch for his position, they still attempted to fill needs. And they drafted Greg Hardy, who is a guy with amazing potential as a defensive end but has had a history of injuries and attitude problems, but at the 175th pick he’s a steal, if he keeps his head together and doesn’t self destruct.
8. New England Patriots – I guess this wasn’t a bad draft and it’s awfully hard to second guess the brain trust in New England but the Patriots didn’t light the world on fire with their selections. They made another big valiant attempt at a tight end, but it’s hard to tell if this will work out. It seems tight ends never work out in New England.
They needed help at the linebacker position and got two solid rookies in Jermaine Cunningham and Brandon Spikes to help rebuild a once vaunted defense. Still, the Patriots had a lot of picks and yet got no one that really impressed anyone. But that seems to be the Patriot way. They draft good players, not good names. I just wonder if this year was the exception.
7. Cleveland Browns – Holmgren came in with a game plan and it’s been executed perfectly. He gets the guard he needs in Shawn Lauvao, they got a stud corner back in Joe Haden and he was able to get Colt McCoy in a later round.
Holmgren loves McCoy and thinks he’ll fit in perfectly in the West Coast offense he’s looking to install. Things may finally be looking up in Cleveland.
6. Houston Texans – It’s hard to tell if the players are going to be great but you can’t knock the Texans for not trying. They had 3 primary needs: RB, CB, and DT and their first 3 picks were RB, CB, and DT. This is the definition of drafting for need. This is how teams get better.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Loved this draft. They got a sure fire defensive tackle in Gerald McCoy. They again draft another defensive tackle with the 35th pick. They pick up two talented receiver they sorely needed. This draft looked like an organization that knows what they are looking for.
4. Kansas City Chiefs – Lots of respect must be given to the Chiefs for taking Eric Berry. He is arguably the best player in the draft. They drafted need and got the most out of their picks. We’ll see if a bit of the Patriots influence can rub off on the Chiefs.
3. San Diego Chargers – They always draft well and this year was no exception. Ryan Matthews was a great first round selection. And they got a steal with Cam Thomas in the 5 round. Thomas was a projected 2nd round pick on some draft boards. The Chargers always have a way of finding value.
2. San Francisco 49ers – They did an outstanding job of drafting for need in this draft. They got exactly what they needed. The two offensive lineman they took will help them immensely this year and while they didn’t draft a quarterback, they focused on making their running game stronger, and with Frank Gore in the backfield that’s never a bad thing.
1. Seattle Seahawks – Pete Carroll and company did a great job with the draft. Okung is a stud. He will help the offensive line immediately. Earl Thomas is a stud as well. And one of the steals of the draft is getting Golden Tate in the 3rd round when he clearly has 1st round talent. The Seahawks have a lot of holes and they are rebuilding a bit but this draft was the best in the league and a great way to begin the Pete Carroll era.
New Style NFL Draft a Ratings Success
The viewers have spoken and interest in the NFL draft was not hampered by the expansion of the event to three days and its first ever airing in primetime. ESPN is reporting successful ratings for the new format which used to take place on the weekends in the afternoon.
That overall ratings are up 27% from last year as the first round aired Thursday night in primetime on ESPN and the NFL Network.
Between the two networks, Zap2it reports “the draft averaged 8.3 million viewers (7.3 million on ESPN and 1 million on NFL Network) — more than most of what aired on broadcast TV for the night. Only CBS’ lineup (“Survivor,” “CSI” and “The Mentalist”) and FOX’s “Bones” drew more viewers.”
The draft took a big bite out of the broadcast networks Thursday night as well after beating the NBA playoff game that night. NBC’s comedies and FOX shows were all below their season averages.
Draft Dodging the NFL
The pride of Mt. Tuskegee State, Willis Jackson, talks about why you should fear the draft and his plans for draft day 2010. Since 1936, the post-college careers of 13,000 young men have been altered by the draft of the NFL.
They are called up into the league and immediately sent to training camps to begin their work. These young men also end up in some of the most dangerous in the country, like Detroit or Cleveland. It’s tragic.
Funny or Die’s “Gamechangers” series takes a look at Jackson’s acceptance of his fate and his decision to head to Canada to escape the NFL Draft.
NSFW: Funny video but it does have some language.
Jason Campbell is now a Raider

The drama in D.C. is now over for quarterback Jason Campbell. Trades are making up the big news for the day as Seattle is building a backfield and Oakland is grabbing a QB.
The Redskins traded the five-year veteran quarterback to Oakland in exchange for the Raiders’ fourth-round pick in the 2012 draft.
“I’m just glad the situation is over and I’m moving forward,” Campbell said this afternoon. “Sometimes change comes in your life, change comes in your career, and you’ve just got to be ready to adapt. I’m going to go out to Oakland and give 110 percent and do everything I can to help that organization become a winning team.
“Obviously, that was my goal here. Of course, a lot of things happened and we weren’t able to accomplish that goal. But hopefully this time around it’ll happen. I just wish the best of luck to the Redskins, and I’m moving forward in my career and my life. This is a great opportunity for me, and that’s the way I’m looking at it.”
The addition of Donovan McNabb from Philadelphia earlier this month new coach Mike Shanahan signaled the end of the up-and-down era of Campbell who experienced a rotation of coaches and offensive coordinators during his stay.
Campbell was drafted in 2005 by Joe Gibbs and started 52 games for the Redskins. He threw for 55 touchdowns and 38 interceptions.
Draft News: Leon Washington, LenDale White Traded to Seahawks
Tennessee Titans RB LenDale White will be reunited with his college coach Pete Carroll after a surprising draft-day trade early on Day 3 that sent White to Seattle along with defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson in exchange for Seattle’s fourth-rounder and sixth-rounder. The Titans selected UCLA cornerback Alterraun Verner with the spot acquired in the deal.
Carroll was not done trading as he soon acquired the talented Leon Washington, who is returning from a serious leg injury, from the Jets and a seventh-round pick for the ‘Hawks fifth-round choice in the 2010 NFL Draft. The Jets moved up to the spot to use their last draft pick to add RB John Connor from Kentucky.
The moves by Carroll indicate his desire to ramp up a weak Seattle running game that ranked 26th in rushing last year. Justin Forsett and Julius Jones will now be competing for a job in the crowded Seahawks backfield and it will be interesting to see if they all make the final roster. Jones has never really hit big in Seattle and may be on his way out.
LenDale still has a lot of gas in his tank and gives the ‘Hawks a power running back, something they have lacked for years. Washington, who earned a Pro Bowl bid as a kickoff returner in 2008, could help form a dynamic new backfield duo with the crushing White.
Julius Jones was the Seahawks leading rusher last year with 663 yards.

2010 NFL Mock Draft
2010 NFL Mock Draft
The NFL Draft kicks off Thursday night as the league expands their annual event into prime time television with 3 days of action. Round 1 will be held Thursday, round 2-3 on Friday, and rounds 4-7 on Saturday on the NFL Network and ESPN as well as cell phones on the Verizon network.
The new, extended format of the draft may change the system. Teams will now be able to evaluate the first round and then work out trades and deals overnight for the upcoming rounds.
We can hope for the usual amount of drama including some surprise picks and the occasional trade. For the most part, we here at the Pigskin Doctors feel confident that the first round of picks will unfold in a similar way to our Mock Draft.
St. Louis RamsSam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma The Rams need a lot of help across the board but with the release of vet Marc Bulger, this pick is a lock. |
Detroit LionsNdamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska I love the explosiveness of Suh to edge out McCoy for this pick. He’s strong and fast for a man of his size and will be a huge upgrade to the Lions D-line. |
Tampa Bay BuccaneersGerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma The Bucs need help on their D-line. OK. They need help everywhere but this is a glaring hole that can be filled by the huge McCoy. |
Washington RedskinsRussell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State The ‘Skins traded for McNabb which kicks the need for a QB to the later rounds or even next year. The O-line needs help and with Okung, Bulaga, and Williams in the mix it is a perfect opportunity to grab someone to guard McNabb. Also look for Williams to be tapped for this pick for a squad that allowed 46 sacks in 2009,. |
Kansas City ChiefsEric Berry, S, Tennessee Berry is the best available player here and a stellar defensive talent that you don’t get a chance on too often. An O-lineman would be a solid choice but Berry’s a future All-Pro who can help nail down that Chief secondary. |
Seattle SeahawksBryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa The ‘Hawks need to come out of this draft with a metric ton of linemen for both sides of the ball. Their O-line is one of the worst in the league and with another pick at #14 they can afford to pick someone like Berry here if he’s available and grab a lineman a few picks later. |
Cleveland BrownsTrent Williams, OT, Oklahoma Mike Holmgren is now in charge and his mantra of picking the best available player might land Williams in Cleveland. Plus, with the lack of a solid QB the Browns will need a lot of help. |
Oakland RaidersBruce Campbell, OT, Maryland It’s the Raiders. Who knows what they are going to do…. |
Buffalo BillsJimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame The Bills could use a solid offensive lineman here but the lure of adding a QB might be too hard to overlook. Clausen is a wild card in this draft. He’s not healthy and there are questions about his leadership. If the Bills or Jags don’t bite on him, look for Clausen to tumble pretty far down the draft board. |
Jacksonville JaguarsDerrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech Look to Morgan as a strong pass rusher who can put some heat on opponents. |
Denver BroncosRolando McClain, ILB, Alabama The Broncos lost Brandon Marshall and could go after a WR like Dez Bryant if they wanted to deal with another troubled player. McClain is one of the best linebackers in the draft and would be a welcome addition to the squad. |
Miami DolphinsDan Williams, DT, Tennessee The Dolphins added Brandon Marshall to their receivers squad to fix that issue. Their next big need is to fill in their D-line. Jason Taylor signed with the Jets and Williams will add some talent to their aging line. |
San Francisco 49ersJoe Haden, CB, FLorida The first of 2 picks for SF could help bring some speed to the 49ers secondary. |
Seattle SeahawksC.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson The D-line could use some help here but Spiller is a huge talent that could open up the offense for the ‘Hawks. |
New York GiantsEverson Griffen, DE, USC Griffen can help bring some depth, speed and power from the outside and add some youth to a D-line that has a habit of getting injured. |
Tennessee TitansJerry Hughes, OLB, TCU Hughes has great strength and pass rush ability that will help Keith Bullock who is getting old. |
San Francisco 49ersAnthony Davis, OT, Rutgers Davis is a huge addition to an O-line that could use the help in pass protection. |
Pittsburgh SteelersMaurkice Pouncey, C/G, Florida The versatile Pouncey will be an assist to a porous O-line that gave up too many sacks last year. And with their QB problem (Big Ben suspend 6 games) they will need a little extra protection for their backups. |
Atlanta FalconsJason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida Pierre-Paul is a huge question mark in the draft. He’s an unproven talent with great potential but would be a great addition to an aging D-line. |
Houston TexansEarl Thomas, FS, Texas Size may be an issue with Thomas but he should be able to contribute at CB if the need calls for it. The Texans could use a strong playmaker in their secondary if they want to make a move to beat the Colts this year. |
Cincinnati BengalsDez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State The Bengals are showing the age at WR with Chad Ochocinco slowing down. Signing Antonio Bryant helps but the addition of Bryant to the Bengals adds an instant deep threat to the team. |
New England PatriotsBrandon Graham, OLB, Michigan Graham adds a great pass rush ability to the Patriots to a linebacking crew that needs to pressure opposing QB’s more. |
Green Bay PackersSergio Kindle, OLB, Texas The addition of Kindle on the outside will complement the Pack tremendously. |
Philadelphia EaglesTaylor Mays, S, USC Brian Dawkins is gone and the Eagles could use a replacement. |
Baltimore RavensJermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma Todd Heap has battled injuries through his career and with the addition of Boldin to the WR crew the Ravens could use a solid TE for blocking as well as a Red Zone option. |
Arizona CardinalsSean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri Weatherspoon may end up being taken earlier as his draft stock rises. The Cards lost a lot of talent in the offseason and could use a solid LB to keep the defense improve. |
Dallas CowboysCharles Brown, OT, USC The offense collapsed against Minnesota in the playoffs last year and the Cowboys let Flozell Adams go. Brown would be a great addition to a squad that needs to improve. |
San Diego ChargersRyan Mathews, RB, Fresno State Sproles is the man and LT is out. Mathews adds some speed and power to take the inside running game and let Sproles do his thing. |
New York JetsTerrence Cody, DT, Alabama The Jets have added so much talent in the off season that they should stay very competitive this year. Mount Cody is my sleeper pick this year and he is a huge stopper in the middle and would be a great addition to Rex Ryan’s defense. |
Minnesota VikingsKyle Wilson, CB, Boise State Wilson will be a great addition to the Vikings secondary which is getting old. |
Indianapolis ColtsRodger Saffold, OT, Indiana Saffold is a great addition to Manning’s line which needs to add a little more protection and help with the run game. |
New Orleans SaintsJared Odrick, DT, Penn State The Saints need a little help on the D-line to take some pressure off the offense. They’ve added Alex Brown from the Bears and an additional talent like Odrick will help tremendously. |
