April 21, 2012 – Capt. Gridiron

Oh, the mid-80′s were such a simpler time. The NFL was coming into its own as the popularity of the sport and the Super Bowl reached record numbers. Uniforms were loose and tacky without much thought to style or functionality. The rival USFL had lost its way and the new music of rap was taking hold in mainstream culture.

That meant it was alright to do things like this. Several teams including the Bears with their Super Bowl rap had found success with the fans by rocking the Keytar and gathering the players to bust a rhyme. Today, these rap videos are hard to stomach which is why it’s such delicous awesomness to find videos like the 1986 Redskins rap called “Thanks 12th man.”

Before Dan Synder bought his franchise all the way to the cellar, the Redskins had a nice run of success in the 80′s with two Super Bowl wins including one in the 1987 season. So this video must have done something because they did win the big game the next year.

In 1986 the ‘Skins were powered by Art Monk, Charles Mann, Darrell Green, Jay Schroeder and head coach Joe Gibbs (before he retired for the first time). And If you are ready, and I think you are, prepare to witness something you have never witnessed before…

Here is a music video from 1986. This video features the 1986 Redskins in a Thanks to the fans! This was part of the 75th anniversary Giveaway to fans. Enjoy the dance moves. Hail to the Redskins!

The worldwide impact of the sport of football lives strong in South Asia. Last fall the announcement came of the establishment of the Elite Football League of India (EFLI), which is the first men’s professional American football league in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

It’s nice to see the American version of football spreading across the globe and getting established in an area relatively new to the sport. India is huge on the sport of Cricket, which I tried to watch once. I got confused and then fell asleep. Not my cup of tea.

The EFLI is slated to begin playing in 2012 with ten teams located in various cities across India, one in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and one in Bangladesh. The EFLI will be South Asia’s first professional American football league.

[via] The Elite Football League of India will create an exclusively Indian product packaged perfectly and specially to advantage television and media support ultimately to become the most valuable sports franchise in the world.

Thousands of jobs will be created as a result of the immense need for coaches, athletes, trainers, referees, and support staff as well as the even greater demand for employees in the legal, maintenance, media, marketing and retail sectors.

And if you want to catch out the fun be sure to click below to watch the video of the first scrimmage from the EFLI from Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, India.

April 4, 2012 – Capt. Gridiron

And just like Keyser Söze … poof …Gregg Williams was gone.

The defense coach was once heralded for his great defensive performances that helped the New Orleans Saints win their first Super Bowl. Now, the NFL has indefinitely banned Williams for his role in the Bounty scandal in New Orleans after news that the Saints defensive players were paid bonuses for injuring and knocking out players.

I personally wonder if Gregg Williams will get the rare ‘banned forever’ tag in the NFL after the ordeal plays out. Commissioner Roger Goodell is not very pleased, as well he shouldn’t be, with the story erupting and showing and NFL team out the purposely injure opponents.

A new audio tape is burning up the Internet in which Williams instructs his players to injure San Francisco 49ers players during a playoff game. It’s pretty damning evidence as Williams personally mentions players names like Alex Smith, Frank Gore, and Michael Crabtree and tells his defensive players to injure them.

[via Pro Football Talk] Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin was sickened when he listened to the audio of former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams urging his players to hurt players on the 49ers.

Irvin said he understands that coaches fire up their players by talking about physical football. But when Williams urged his players to go after 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree’s ACL, he crossed a line that Irvin believes is unforgivable.

I know we can clown around about Saints head coach Sean Payton and how the NFL should lift his one-year ban but the fact that this Bounty system existed and Williams was so blatantly callous about it is rather disgusting. Video has NSFW language.

The audiotape is damaging enough that there are already rumors of various players thinking about suing the NFL and Gregg for the bounties. That could keep this story alive and kicking for quite awhile, unlike Williams’ career which just got knocked out of the game and … poof…disappeared.

[via Niners Noise] Former 49er QB Steve Young, also a lawyer has said that if he were playing today, he would sue the Saints and I hope players take his advice. Injuries are apart of the game, football is a violent sport by nature. Injuring players on purpose, especially attempting to go for one’s head is despicable. So many retired players suffer from a vast variety of injuries after retiring from the NFL. That’s one of the biggest reasons Goodell has done so much to make the game safer. Williams spit in the face of the leagues efforts and for that, I hope he pays for it the rest of his professional life.

The NFL and NIKE are officially back in bed with each other. I give it three years before it gets out of control. For the most part the new NIKE NFL unis around the league are still the same. Minor tweaks here and there, mostly moving the numbers from the arms to the shoulders and giving all the jerseys a shrink-wrap look. [via KSK]

But then came the Seahawks unis.

And with the tackiness of what NIKE did to Oregon and Texas Longhorn uniforms, I was really dreading the day when NIKE took over because I just feared we’d be seeing more of this (sadly, made by Reebok) but done with that rounded futuristic number font and lots of textured cloth patched together in the name of science.

The team’s official colors are now Wolf grey, college navy, and action green.

Needless to say, if you don’t like florescent green you won’t like the colors. Personally, I really dig the white unis, mixed on the blue (lose the green and we’ll talk), and hate the grey. I mean, nothing says grey and rainy like Seattle weather. Do we really need a uni to capture that suicidal feeling?

The biggest issue will come from all the new teams alternate uniforms. This is where NIKE shines. Joking, this is where all the pain will come from.

Most of the teams just showed their new, standard uniforms this week. As you can tell by the Seahawks lineup, they can already mix and match several combos for a very Skittle experience.

Vince Young for Towels from Vince Young

Young was the third overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans, NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and is a two-time Pro Bowler. Now, he’s a backup QB looking for a home.

Don’t think of him as a bust like JaMarcus Russell. Think of him more of a wandering disappointment of talent, like Jeff George.

I like towels, too!

While Vince still has a lot of talent inside, and free agency on his side, it will be a curious experiment to see if VY can recapture his golden years. At the age of 28, Young still has a lot of years to right the ship he’s on and the first step is towels. Yup. Towels. Makes me think more of Towlie from South Park than this.

For anyone who doesn’t believe in the Madden Curse just know it’s real. Seriously.

It doesn’t happen to everyone but almost all of the NFL players featured on the cover struggle the next year and last years cover boy, Peyton Hillis, just flat-out imploded to bring back the rumors of a curse.

This year you can vote for your favorite player again to be on the Madden 13 cover [vote here]. And it turns out one player, the Texans Arian Foster, is a bit excited about the chance to get on his first Madden cover despite the curse.

But he must get past that new Jet, Tim Tebow, first. Here’s a video of Foster taking it to the streets of NYC to talk to people about the Madden curse and the chances he or Tebow will make it to the next round of voting. [via Bleacher Report]

Fresh off another stellar NFL campaign with the Houston Texans, Arian Foster runs the streets of New York City to ask fans about the vaunted “Madden Curse”.

Foster interviewed everyday New Yorkers to see if they believe in the Madden Curse — the belief that a player will either get injured or have a disappointing season after being chosen as the game’s cover.

Currently, Foster is part of the 32 remaining NFL players pitted against each other in a bracket-style competition to see who will be featured.

It’s fitting that Arian Foster is in New York as he faces Tim Tebow, the Big Apple’s newest start, in the first round of fan voting.

Not sure if he can defeat Tebowmania, but Foster is lobbying hard, just watch the video.

In 2011, Foster gained over 1,800 all-purpose yards and 12 touchdowns, being named to the pro bowl in the process. It also marked the first season the Texans made the playoffs in franchise history.

NFLDraft365 is a production of Bleacher Report Videos. The show highlights all of the players, news, happenings and gossip surrounding the NFL Draft and is covered year-round for NFL fans, who are serious about their teams.

With his checking account in a ‘rebuilding year’, just like the Browns organization for the last 22 years, this season ticket holder makes a plea to the team to consider various payment options for the upcoming season tickets.

I think $.50 tickets for crappy pre-season tickets is a good deal. It’s a bargain in comparison to the $11 beers to watch a team known as a ‘Factory of Sadness.’

Mike Polk, Jr., a Browns fan (sorry man, I feel your pain) created this fantastic video in response to the Browns request for payment on the season tickets he had last year.

Maybe if the city of Cleveland protests the team and does some sort of Occupy the Browns outside of the Stadium instead of inside the stadium on Sundays something will happen to fix the team. I guess as long as they keep filling seats on Sunday with a mediocre team the owners will be lazy enough to not do anything.

The Browns would like to know when to expect payment for my season ticket package. I am happy to oblige them. Go Browns!

March 18, 2012 – Capt. Gridiron

With all the talk of Peyton Manning finding a new home in the NFL the idea of the former All Pro landing in Phoenix to help out the Cardinals has come and gone. The desert birds have had a hard time trying to replace Kurt Warner, their last good QB, and that has fans wondering if Kurt could make a comeback and play again.

But the game has passed Kurt Warner by. Or has it? Busy with his new endorsements, Kurt talks in an exclusive interview about whether he’s coming back to football… That and the upcoming Kurt Warner movie starting Denzel.

I think he’s going to be OK. The Cards on the other hand, well…they are sticking with their expensive Kolb gamble. I’d say give it another year before it’s called a bust but Kolb will need to prove himself real soon in the next season or he’s going to be the highest paid bench warmer around.

Check out this humorous video of how Kurt Warner is spending his free time.

February 27, 2012 – Dr. Crackback

The new owner’s strategy for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Shahid Khan and his mustache have bought the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars and while many of us thought it was to uproot the team, located in a small market, and plant it down in Los Angeles, one of the biggest TV markets in the world, it’s refreshing to see that this guy might be one of the new wave of owners that could help change the world of sports.

Keeping the customer in mind is one of those ‘things’ that many businesses seem to forget while looking the at the spreadsheets and profit numbers. Forbes magazine sat down with Khan and went over his plans with the team and his future plans for the franchise.

It’s a great look at the inside of the team and if you’re a Jags fan you will be pleasantly surprised at this guy as the new owner. And c’mon, that mustache! It’s so beautiful!
