February 26, 2012 – Capt. Gridiron

Although Terrell Owens was a headache in the locker room during most of his time in the NFL you have to admire his determination a bit in getting back into the league. Last year T.O. didn’t get a chance to strut his stuff as injuries and the smoldering remains of all those burnt bridges caught up to him.

The Cincinnati Bengals chose not to resign the now 38-year old receiver before the 2011 season and no other team ponied up the cash to sign T.O. to a short-term deal. Add in a torn ACL around that time and many thought it was the end of the T.O. era.

But no one told that to Terrell. He kept pitching himself as still viable and he might have a point. During the 2010 season with the lowly Bengals T.O. led the team in receptions (72), yards (983) and touchdowns (9) for the season.

So T.O. kept at it and now he’s back in the game… kinda.

T.O. signed with the Allen (Tex.) Wranglers of the Indoor Football League, not to be confused with the Arena Football League but practically the same thing. His first catch was even a TD and the old guy finished it off with 3 total and if you don’t think T.O. is still relavant just know that this Indoor Football League game had an attendance of 63,000! Yikes!

Maybe Cincinnati should resign him. The Bengals only averaged a league low 49,251 fans last year.

Wait, what? Oh yeah, it’s the NMA sum up of the Super Bowl. The Taiwanese News Channel gives us the great animated summary of the big game as only they could.

From the great Manningham catch that helped keep the Giants alive to win the game to the geriatric Lady Gaga impersonator that showed up during halftime, it’s all here summed up with goofy animation.

Eli Manning led the New York Giants to a 4th quarter come-from-behind victory over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI, the second time the Giants have upset the Patriots in the Super Bowl in four years.

Baltimore fans are still in shock and I don’t blame them. After holding in for a close game with the New England Patriots, the Ravens had a chance to go into overtime but Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff pulled a Scott Norwood after missing a 32-yard field goal with 11 seconds left.

Here’s one Ravens fan reaction to Cundiff missing the field goal.

Replays would show that the snap and hold were not perfect. Say what you will about Cundiff but the game is 60 minutes long and what happens in last 20 seconds isn’t what won or lost the game. The Ravens had several opportunities to take the game and they fought hard. I feel for Cundiff for being the brunt of the blame.

Houston hosted their first NFL playoff game since a team named the Oilers live in the Astrodome and the wait was worth it for some fans. Despite a long drought from the postseason, the fact is the Texans franchise hasn’t been around that long.

It did take them a bit longer than expected to reach the playoffs but they did well in refocusing the team over the last year to make the Texans a competitive team and one of the best defenses in the league.

The Cincinnati Bengals, fueled into relevance by rookie QB Andy Dalton, had their hopes on an upset in Texas Saturday but in reality had little chance against the dominant Houston defense.

Not since James Harrison’s INT in Super Bowl XLIII has a defensive player turned a game around. In Saturdays’ match, Texans defender J.J. Watt shows off his tight-end skills as he plucks a ball from the air, while being blocked, and returns it for a TD to suck all the wind out of the Bengals for quite awhile.

Similar to Harrison’s Super Bowl INT, Watt’s gets the INT and on the board just before halftime. Seemingly, the Bengals never recovered and it gave Houston a seven-point lead heading into halftime.

This is not the first time I’ve been in awe of a clip showing the skills of Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson. The first one was more of a clip that should be sent to the Academy Awards for best flop in a game. Or at least he could have been a professional soccer player.

But today’s weekend game of the Bengals and Cardinals saw a clip on the other end of the spectrum. Instead of making a clip great by acting funny, Simpson showed off his acrobatic skills as he jumped and flipped over a player to get into the endzone and score.

Epic!

Ah yeah, Roddy White is paying huge divadends lately for my fantasy team. After a slower then expected start to the season, in which White only scored 3 TD’s and had one 100-yard game in the first 11 games, Roddy has turned it on and matched that effort in just the last 3 weeks.

The Atlanta Falcons got their Bye Week on primetime this week as the Jacksonville Jaguars, the saddest franchise in professional sports, derped their way into Hot-lanta to try and upend the Falcons.

Powered by Matt Ryan’s 3 TD’s, the Falcons obliterated the Jags 41-14 on Thursday Night football. Roddy himself grabbed 2 TD’s and 135 yards. The best one was this nab in the endzone that saw a pass that could have been for White or maybe Tony Gonzalez.

Doesn’t matter because White wanted it more and
